Towards a global history of the Hebrew book: the view from 16th-century Antwerp

Opening lecture 2020-2021 of the Institute of Jewish Studies, University of Antwerp, given by Dr. Theodor Dunkelgrün – University of Cambridge

Thursday 15 October 2020 at 20h00

This lecture will be held online

Twelve years ago, the Institute for Jewish Studies and UCSIA at the University of Antwerp, in collaboration with the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, organised an international conference "The Jewish Book in a Christian World." Together with a splendid exhibit in the Museum Plantin-Moretus and the richly documented catalogue Hebraica Veritas (2008) by Albert van der Heide, the conference mapped out the immense importance of sixteenth-century Antwerp to the history of the Hebrew Book and of early modern Hebrew scholarship in both Christian and Jewish contexts. In the years since, book history and the history of scholarship have flourished in a wide range of interconnected ways. In this year's inaugural lecture, Dr Theodor Dunkelgrün (Cambridge) will reconsider the history of the Hebrew Book in sixteenth-century Antwerp in light of new directions in the study of early modern material culture, biblical scholarship and global history.
